Hestia lovingly tends....

So, Juno very thoughtfully sent me down some seeds from her Japanese Anenome earlier this year.  I posted some of the seeds to my Evil Twins in England.

I think that their seeds failed to germinate.

You can imagine my JOY and astonishment when one of mine DID germinate.

'My God, I might actually be able to DO this gardening thing!' thought I as the tiny green seedling pushed its way through the soil.

So I lovingly tended it and spoke words of love and encouragement into its tiny leaves.

When it got too dry in the polytunnel when we went to Blackpool in June, I was distraught and practically nursed it back from the DEAD on my return.

It is now hardening-off outside (see: coping with flood conditions) and I took a look at it the other day.

And it looks like this:

And even *I* can tell that this is not a bloody Anenome.  Japanese or even Sea.

It is, I am reliably informed ....... a weed.

*sigh*

I returned from two days of internetless joy at Juno's yesterday and felt compelled to bake Rock Cakes from Marian Keyes' book, Saved by Cake.

'Could you maybe bake these every week?' said Sonshine, stuffing some stray raisins into his mouth as we spooned the mixture into rock-shaped splodges on a baking tray.

'Maybe not every week - we'll be the size of Belgium and our pancreases (pancreasi?) will be screaming for mercy.  Maybe monthly?'

The compliments continued when the cakes emerged golden and delicious-looking from the oven.

We tucked into half a cake each as we waited for them to cool down.

'These are WAY better than my birthday cake!!!' he assured me.

Ouch.  Thanks.  But ouch.

And finally, this arose on Facebook this morning via Evil Twin Viv and constitutes my entire relationship with the plastic storage vessels in question:

  1. Some of mine germinated :) Not sure if they are still going or if they've suffered from mould/dehydration yet. Will advise :)

    1. Just make sure that they're not bloomin weeds, Ania!

Fingers crossed you get actual plant seeds to germinate!

  2. Ali -

LOL I have been known to nurture weeds too! Quite embarrassing!

As for the Tupperware lids ... this is the state of Tupperware around the world! The lid you need has always just "vanished".

    1. Universal law - tupperware lids never fit the damn dish you've just tipped all the food into.

This very morning I just binned some coconut milk of indeterminate age from a tupperware container at the back of the fridge. I'm sure that it was a cure for something!

    1. I still like you, regardless of the matching tupperware thing. You are delightfully deranged in so many other departments, it sort of cancels out the organised tupperware thing :-D

    1. Just be careful in case they turn out to be weed seeds :-D

  5. Oh Ali whatever that is, it does look pretty. Perhaps it will be Weed, as opposed to a weed, and you can add it to your rock buns? My sister used to make them - I forgot how good they were!

Love that Tupperware thing - as they say, its funny because its true! xxx

    1. Sadly, it's just A weed. It's not even going to have attractive flowers. I am feeling a bit sad about having to put it in The Bin Bag though. I nurtured it. Really. I cared for that weed more than my tomatoes....

Weed cakes. Had them once. Giggled my head off and lost feeling in my tongue. Happy days :-D

  6. A weed no doubt, but a tasty one. This one came over to the USA with the early settlers as a food crop.
    Those rock buns look amazing.

  7. It may be a weed Ali, but it's a lovely healthy weed.

    Well done.

Actually you may have had a lucky escape.

I've been trying to kill the bloody Japanese Anenome in our garden for 7 bloody ears, and it keeps on coming back, smothering everything in site.
I've tried digging, mulching, glyphosate and every bloody weedkiller under the sun, and it still comes back every year. I even tried a flamethrower last year to no permanent avail.

Maybe next time you're out in NZ you can come over and touch it, I'm sure that will do the trick.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    1. Are you sure that it's a Japanese Anenome? They're rather attractive plants....I'm wondering why you might want to kill it.

Are you maybe thinking of Japanese Knotweed which is a total BASTARD to get rid of and is actually a notifiable weed. I'm not sure who you notify or why. But I do know that you must burn the cuttings of it, not dump them.

And as far as my 'touching' it and it will die....I am working a sort of reverse Jesus Christ thing? I can totally work with that.
